Preparing the Planter:
Carefully place cinder blocks or bricks inside the vessel. Fill in the spaces between the bricks and top off the vessel with additional hay. Be sure to make the inside of the container very tight and sturdy. Pile the hay tightly about two inches above the rim of the container. |
| You can buy several different colors of pumpkins or you can keep them all the same color if you wish. |
Preparing the Trellis:
Recruit a few stalwart friends to help you turn the trellis and hold it upside down. Carefully fill the trellis starting with the mixed gourds. They should fit tightly like a puzzle. It is important not to pierce the pumpkins or the gourds while placing them since they will quickly rot if their skin is broken. Continue by layering small pumpkins, pie pumpkins and gourds.
Once the trellis is filled with the tightly packed pumpkins and gourds, carefully turn the trellis rightside up, on top of the container. Make sure trellis's anchoring prongs are inside the vessel. The trellis will be heavy so do not attempt to do this part alone. At this point, some of the gourds will move down and you may want to use your left over pumpkins and gourds to fill in those spaces.
We found the best selection of gourds and pumpkins at the Farmer's Market. Trellises can be found at any home or garden center. Try to find one that has adequate weaving to hold the gourds in place.
