Jay Shafer has called just such a place home for 10 years now – in fact, he built the home himself without any prior building experience. And his little do-it-yourself project turned the former grocery store clerk into a budding entrepreneur – he now has his own business building small houses similar to his own.

While there are many advantages of downsizing, he says one of the best is paying about $100 per year for utilities. That’s right, per year.
