North Texas Food Bank Says ‘Thanks’

Representatives of the North Texas Food Bank recently paid a special visit to Founder and Chairman of the Board Ebby Halliday to say “happy birthday” and to express their appreciation for Ebby Halliday Realtors’ support of the food bank at a particularly critical time. Jasmin Holmstrup, director of corporate engagement, and Laura Hoagland, corporate engagement manager, presented Ebby with a framed thank-you note from the food bank and a child’s drawing expressing gratitude, and some home-baked cookies!

Last fall, at about the same time Ebby Halliday Realtors was highlighting its “The Kitchen is the Heart of the Home” promotion, the North Texas Food Bank issued a call to action to area businesses to increase their support. We’re proud to say each of Ebby’s 25 North Texas offices, as well as the company’s corporate office, enthusiastically responded by donating and collecting thousands of pounds of non-perishable food items.

During the NTFB representatives’ visit with Ebby, Ms. Holmstrup reported that Ebby Halliday Realtors had helped provide approximately 24,000 meals for hungry North Texans. Adding fun to the visit, Ms. Holmstrup brought her daughter, Kyra, to meet Ebby and the two immediately hit it off, discussing hats, school, and more.

Restaurant News You Need to Know

LYFE Kitchen

Have you noticed that a lot of highly specialized restaurants have started popping up all over Dallas? If you like gluten-free, paleo, vegetarian, or restaurants that focus on meat, your possibilities are endless in D-FW. Take a look at this guide to make sure you get the food that meets your needs.

LYFE Kitchen, a gluten-free restaurant that promotes sustainability and wants you to “Love Your Food Everyday” will open a Plano location and two other North Texas locations this summer.

Did you know there’s such a thing as healthy fast food? Start, “real fast food,” serves clean, from-scratch food with environmentally-friendly packaging that you can eat on the go. They use local and organic ingredients to make sure that your healthy food is also tasty food. You’ll find them on Greenville Ave. in Dallas.

Greenville Ave. has become a hotspot for concepts like this. Down the way from Start is HG Sply Co., a hunter/gather restaurant that lends its skills to the paleo diet. They use only food that comes from wildlife and natural farming in order to fill you with “food your body was built to eat.”

Again on Greenville Ave. is The Blind Butcher, a “beer and meat mecca.” They do great beer, cured meats, and “assorted green things.” If you’re looking to get your meat on, look no further.

Add one more to the count for Greenville Ave, and one for Katy Trail. Both Company Cafe locations are serving up a natural, organic, fresh food menu that has many gluten-free options as well as meats that are grass-fed.

The menu at Kozy on Mckinney Ave. is almost entirely gluten-free, and offers comfort foods and bakery items for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Here it’s also about grass-fed meat, wild-caught seafood, and organic and locally grown produce.

Southwest/DAL: 2 new gates, 12 new destinations

Southwest/DAL: 2 new gates, 12 new destinations

Airlines said Monday that it wants to add 12 additional nonstop cities out of Dallas Love Field to its already growing arsenal of nonstop destinations that it has planned for 2014.

Early last month, we reported on the breaking news that Southwest had a deal to add 15 new nonstop flights from Love Field that would begin starting in October 2014. But this Monday, March 10, Southwest announced its interest in the two gates that American Airlines must give up at the airport. This would allow Southwest to add an additional 20 flights with service to 12 new nonstop cities in 2014.

The 12 newest destinations would include:

-Charlotte, NC

-Charleston, SC

-Detroit, MI

-Indianapolis, IN

-Memphis, TN

-Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN

-Newark, NJ

-Philadelphia, PA

-Raleigh/Durham, NC

-Sacramento, CA

-San Francisco, CA

-Seattle/Tacoma, WA

If Southwest wins over these two additional gates it will control 18 of the 20 gates at Dallas Love Field. And, if this happens, Southwest announced that it will add 5 more nonstop destinations in 2015 including:

-Boston, MA

-Oakland, CA

-Panama City Beach, FL

-Portland, OR

-San Jose, CA

A study claims that giving these two gates to Southwest would bring many positive things, like:

-A reduction in airfares of nearly $100 per roundtrip to new DAL markets

-1.4 million more passengers per year flying to and from Dallas

-$120 million in fare savings annually to Dallas residents and visitors

-365,000 new visitors to the Dallas area annually who will spend money in the local economy and therefore generate 4,700 new jobs, $214 million in annual earnings to local workers, and $559 million in local sales per year.

It sounds like this is a deal that’s worth considerable thought for the Dallas Love Field Airport and for anyone who lives in or visits the Dallas area or the proposed additional nonstop destinations. What do you think? Comment below and let us know.

Hottest Outdoor Design Trends 2014

The American Society of Landscape Architects recently surveyed landscape architects who specialize in residential design across the U.S. to predict the most popular trends for outdoor design in 2014. Here’s the breakdown:

94.2% believed gardens and landscaped spaces were somewhat or very popular, 92% believed outdoor living spaces– i.e. outdoor kitchens and entertaining areas- were somewhat or very popular, and, finally, spaces for outdoor recreation were seen as popular by 75.8%.

Across all categories, lighting was thought to be somewhat or very in-demand by 98.3% of respondents. In second place were seating/dining areas, at 97.7%. Fire pits/fireplaces came in third with 95.4% of the votes, and grills took fourth overall with 94.3%.

“Homeowners know that designed landscapes add value to their lives as well as their property values,” said ASLA Executive Vice President and CEO Nancy Somerville, Hon. ASLA. “They’re interested in livable, open spaces that are both stylish and earth friendly.”

Terraces, patios, and decks were also high on people’s lists, voted popular by 97.7% of respondents.

Lucky for you,we’ve got homes that fit the criteria of all of these trends! To search them, click here and choose the fabulous exterior features you’d like to have outside your home.
