53 Years In The Making

In early August, the front page article of the White Rock neighborsgo section of The Dallas Morning News featured a story about 97-year-old Raymond Ogas of Vickery Place. In the article, Mr. Ogas stated that he had lived in the same house that he bought from Ebby Halliday herself back in 1956.

Ebby read the article and wanted to follow up with her past client.

Last Saturday, Ebby, 98, and Mr. Ogas were reunited. They traded stories and shared a glass of lemonade on on the front porch of the home Ebby sold him 53 years ago.

You can read more about their meeting here or see a slideshow below.

Dinner With Dallas Legends Benefits JDRF Dallas

In May, one of the top auction items at the Juvenile Diabetes Reserch Foundation’s (JDRF) Dream Gala was a “Dinner with Dallas Legends” which was billed as a “once-in-a-lifetime experience for an intimate dinner with international business and philanthropic legends T. Boone Pickens, Ebby Halliday and Roger Staubach. (All three are also Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans honorees.)

The dinner was purchased by John & Sharyl Weber, who were also the 2009 Dream Gala Family Honorees and Brian & Wendy Hatfield.

Last month, the dinner took place at renowned Fearing’s restaurant at the Ritz-Carlton with chef Dean Fearing himself overseeing each course. The group enjoyed great conversation, great food and all for a great cause. The highlight of the evening was Peggy Hatfield (Brian’s mother) fulfilling her dream of meeting one of her favorite football players of all time, Roger Staubach. (She also sat by him at dinner.)

The Clock Is Ticking

First-time home buyers still have time to take advantage of the $8,000 tax credit, but time is running out.

To qualify for the tax credit, a home sale must close before December 1, 2009.

The last week of November will be extremely busy for title companies. With Thursday, November 26th and Friday the 27th being Thanksgiving holidays, that entire week and Monday the 30th may be grid-locked with last minute closings.

Many loans now take a minimum of 30 days to process because of new lending requirements and appraisal issues, and some can take longer.

This means first-time buyers wanting the $8,000 tax credit must have applied for their loan, finalized their contract, and have it at the title company by the last week in October to ensure enough time to process and close their transaction before the deadline.

If you would like to take advantage of the tax credit or know someone who may be interested in a first-time purchase, encourage them to act soon.

The next six weeks will pass quickly – don’t miss out!

Forbes Magazine Ranks Dallas Best City To Earn A Living

According to Forbes Magazine, Dallas is the best city in which to earn a living. And the Lone Star State was well represented on the list – Houston was ranked #2 and Austin came in at #4. One of the biggest reasons for the decision was the fact that 38 top-ranked companies are headquartered in Dallas. Rankings were also determined by median income, cost of living, job growth and the quality of the business environment.

The Recession Is Over & Local Housing Gains Cited

That’s straight from the front page of today’s Dallas Morning News, complete with a photo of a recently sold Ellen Terry listing. The article quotes Richard W. Fisher, president and chief executive of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas who states that the great recession is over, the U.S. economy is no longer in free fall and a healing process has begun. The article goes on to state that Texas is apt to remain healthier overall than the national average and that consumer confidence rose in August after falling in June and July.

In other front page news, DMN Real Estate Editor Steve Brown reports that Dallas home prices rose 2.7 percent from May to June to the highest level since last September, according to Standard & Poor’/Case-Shiller Index. That’s the fourth consecutive month of gains in the Dallas index price.
