Helping Neighbors, Honoring 75 Years of Service

Considered one of Texas’ most successful businesswomen, Ebby Halliday Acers left a mark not only as a pioneer in North Texas’ residential real estate industry, but as a philanthropist who believed in giving back to the communities her namesake company serves. This commitment to, in her words, “do something for someone every day,” is still very much a part of the fabric of the Ebby Halliday Companies, a Berkshire Hathaway Affiliate, which includes Ebby Halliday Realtors, Dave Perry-Miller Real Estate and Williams Trew.

To mark our 75th anniversary as a leading real estate provider, we chose to honor this legacy by hosting a fundraising drive across our approximately 2,000 agents and employees to support the North Texas Food Bank and the Tarrant Area Food Bank. Ebby employees reached out to their networks to raise funds for hunger-relief in North Texas at a time when food bank services are needed more than ever due to the ongoing economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Our agents’ work and efforts this year have resulted in a thriving real estate market during a pandemic,” said President and CEO Chris Kelly. “But we know there are so many more in our community who are struggling, and this is a year, more so than ever, to really support them.”

The impact of the pandemic is a driving factor in the Ebby Halliday Companies’ focus on community outreach and charitable giving as we celebrate 75 years of service. And in this season of giving thanks, our storied brand saw a great opportunity to showcase how collaboration and partnership strengthens our communities.

As the employee giving campaign entered its final push leading up to Thanksgiving, the board of the Ebby Halliday Foundation made a matching gift offer. The Foundation provided a $2 match for every $1 donated (up to $30,000), tripling donations and encouraging agents to meet – and surpass – the $75,000 goal. We are thrilled as a company that not only did we meet the goal, we raised $110,000, providing 330,000 meals for our neighbors across North Texas.

With the ongoing pandemic and its devastating results, food insecurity remains a major issue in our region. If you are able to donate to the North Texas Food Bank or the Tarrant Area Food Bank, we encourage you to “do something for someone today.”

Ebby’s namesake school is a multi-cultural community of parents, stakeholders and staff in the Dallas Independent School District dedicated to the development of a respectful and supporting learning environment.

Ebby, who passed away in 2014 at the age of 104, believed strongly in the value of education. As a child, she attended a one-room schoolhouse. Through education, perseverance and just plain hard work – and the ever-growing and accomplished team she assembled around her – Ebby went on to create what is today America’s 12th-largest residential real estate company by sales volume.

In her book, “Ebby Halliday: The First Lady of Real Estate” by Michael Poss, Ebby advised readers to “Make the most of opportunities to learn. Go to college, take special courses, read, listen, observe, and get out there and participate.”

Ebby’s advice remains sage for young students like those at Ebby Halliday Elementary and older ones alike. At Ebby Halliday Elementary, students are challenged each and every day to reach their full potential as responsible individuals.

Ebby Halliday Foundation Launches

Ebby Halliday Foundation Launches

Ebby Halliday Acers, founder of Ebby Halliday Realtors and prominent Dallas philanthropist, is being honored with a namesake foundation that will continue her substantial philanthropic work across North Texas. The Ebby Halliday Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization, supports charitable and educational activities that serve women and children in need in the greater North Texas region. Ebby passed away in 2015 at age 104.

Having opened the doors to successful careers for thousands of people, Ebby was widely admired for her passionate leadership and tireless altruism.

“Each of us who had the good fortune of knowing Ebby was touched by the grace, fortitude and compassion with which she lived her life,” says Mary Frances Burleson, president and chief executive officer of the Ebby Halliday Companies and a founding member of the board of directors of the Ebby Halliday Foundation. “Ebby had a very simple saying that she lived by, ‘Do something for someone every day.’ That small bit of wisdom served Ebby very, very well and has had a tremendous impact on many individuals and organizations in North Texas.”

Adds Ron Burgert, chief financial officer of the Ebby Halliday Companies and a founding member of the board of directors of the Ebby Halliday Foundation, “With the creation of the Ebby Halliday Foundation, we intend for Ebby’s impact to continue to be felt across our region for a long time.”

Among the many tributes to Ebby’s philanthropic legacy in North Texas are Juliette Fowler Communities’ The Ebby House, an innovative transitional community for young women who have experienced foster care or have been abandoned, displaced or abused; the WiNG’s Center at Ebby’s Place, which helps lift economically challenged working women out of poverty; and the Ebby Halliday Library at Happy Hill Farm in Granbury, a 500-acre farm that is home to North Central Texas Academy, an independent college-preparatory day, boarding and international school which seeks out underserved students. And in 2011, she was honored with the new building and naming of the Ebby Halliday Elementary School in Southeast Dallas.

Throughout her life, Ebby’s dedication to her profession and her fellow man remained constant. Ebby was honored with The Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans award, which honors the simple but powerful belief that hard work, honesty and determination can conquer all obstacles.

“For Ebby, a successful life was about much more than extraordinary sales figures,” says Kay Weeks, a sales associate with Ebby’s Little White House office. “Ebby’s other great passion was service to the community she proudly called home. Ebby’s, and our company’s, philanthropic influence on North Texas cannot be overstated. Ebby did not have children of her own, but she helped educate and support many young people.”
