D-FW Weekend Round Up (7/24-7/27)


It’s going to be another hot weekend in D-FW! While there’s no shortage of ways to take advantage of summertime, allow us to suggest a few that you should do while you can!

 

Matthew Sontheimer: The Talley Dunn Gallery is featuring works by Sontheimer, which include collages of text, drawing, sketches, and photographs. They will be on display until August 27.

 

National Tequila Day: Today’s the day, everyone. Get your limes and salt ready because restaurants all over DFW are offering specials. Blue Mesa GrillEl Fenix, On The Border, Cantina Loredo, Urban Taco, and Wild Salsa are all getting in on the fun.

 

Richard Phillips’ Negation of the Universe: The famous bunny installation on the road to Marfa has been relocated to the Dallas Contemporary along with an indoor exhibit of Phillips’ pop culture inspired paintings, short films, and other mixed media work. This will all be on display through August 10.

 

Milk & Honey Girl’s Night Out: This beloved Dallas boutique is throwing a ladies night Thursday, July 24 with champagne, tutorials, and a 20% off discount.

 

CultureMap Summer Social: Celebrate the weekend a night early with the brains behind CultureMap Dallas. Thursday, head to Winston’s Supperclub in Uptown for tequila tastings, good from Urban Taco, live music by DJ Adam Cleland and more. Take an Uber there and get 20% off your ride using a special promo code.

 

Decks in the Park: Every fourth Thursday of the month head to Klyde Warren Park for live music, food trucks, and dancing. This week you’ll hear Red Eye, Rob Vaughan, DJ Love, EZ Eddie D, and Zach Witness.

 

Rangers vs. Oakland A’s: Friday, July 25, through Sunday, July 27, our Rangers will take on the Athletics at Globe Life Park.

 

Deep Ellum Brewing Co. Launch Party: Celebrate the launch of this local brewery’s newest beer, Weizenbock, at The Rustic on Friday with musical guest Shane Smith & The Saints.

 

Salsa Class: Head to Klyde Warren Park’s Muse family Performance Pavilion to shake your stuff and learn some salsa with Studio 22.  Friday classes run from 6 to 7pm and take place through August 1.

 

Cirque du Soleil: Michael Jackson The Immortal World Tour: A riveting fusion of visuals, dance, and music, this tour is an electrifying production presented in a rock concert format that combines the excitement and innovation of Michael Jackson’s music and choreography with Cirque du Soleil unparalleled creativity. Catch the show Friday and Saturday at American Airlines Center.

 

The Best Movie Fest Ever: The Cinemark in West Plano presents three classic films on Saturday, July 26. “Hello Dolly!” plays at 11:15am, “Moulin Rouge” at 2:20pm, and “Oklahoma!” at 5pm. Don’t miss this opportunity to catch three great films for one great price.

 

Cooking Classes at the Dallas Farmer’s Market: The third installation of Saturday chef demonstrations is hosted by Chef Patton Robertson of Five Sixty by Wolf Gang Puck (the restaurant at the top of Reunion Tower). This week’s theme is Korean Style Summer Grilling.

 

National Dance Day: Get your boogie on in celebration of National Dance Day at Klyde Warren Park. The fun begins Saturday with African Dance at 1:30pm.

 

Alpha Rev: Saturday night, this Austin-based band will play at the Granada Theater following the Rocketboys, Dovetail, and Levi Weaver. If you’re a fan of Coldplay and/or Imagine Dragons you should check out the show. Doors open at 7pm.

 

Austin Mahone: Named one of MTV’s Artists to Watch, this 18-year-old San Antonio native is climbing his way up the music charts. Austin Mahone has opened for Taylor Swift in the past and now he’ll headline a concert on Sunday, July 27, that will also include The Vamps, Fifth Harmony, and Shawn Mendes.

 

WWE Live: WWE returns to Dallas with a special Sunday afternoon matinee at American Airlines Center.

Exciting openings, boozy dinners, and a big birthday take over this week’s edition of Food & Beverage News. See where to have the best wine and beer paired dinners in D-FW and get the scoop on all the new restaurants coming town. Plus, you could win a year’s worth of entrees for free!

 

Events:

Texan Restaurant Round Up: The 7th Annual event benefitting Texas food banks runs from tonight, July 22, through Sunday, July 27. More than 60 restaurants across D-FW are participating by offering special menu items that are made from Texas products!

 

Belgian Beer Dinner: The chefs at Mot Hai Ba are teaming up with Barley’s Angels for a five-course dinner in honor of Belgian Beer Week and Belgian Independence Day, which is Wednesday, July 23. The event is ladies only, since the focus of Barley’s Angels is the advancement of education for female beer drinkers.

 

Wine Dinner at The Grape: A three-course, wine-paired dinner featuring Chef Jed Delmer and wines from the Piedmont region of Italy will be offered at The Grape on Thursday, July 24.

 

Celebrity Wine Dinner: Friday, July 25, TV-star and Master Chef Tiffany Derry is cooking up a five-course, wine-paired meal at Wine Poste.

 

Beer School at Community Beer Co.: Have a desire to learn more about craft beer? Join head brewer Jamie Fulton to learn about ingredients, the brewing process, tasting tips and more on Saturday, July 26. You’ll also get entry to the open house from 2-5pm, which includes food trucks, live music, and a tour of the brewery.

 

 

 

News:

Bread Winners 20th Anniversary Giveaway: You could be one of four lucky patrons to win 52 free entrees from Bread Winners as it celebrates its 20th anniversary. During the following weeks, each location will give out a free cake ball to each diner that could hold within it a winning gold coin. Plano location: Week of July 21; NorthPark location: Week of July 28; Inwood location: Week of August 4; Uptown location: Week of August 11.

 

Modmarket: This Colorado-based restaurant chain is making its first move outside the state and planning to open four D-FW locations over the next eight months. It’s all about food that “tastes great, is made from scratch using simple, farm fresh, whole ingredients, is fairly quick, isn’t too expensive, and can be eaten everyday.” Look for locations in Flower Mound, Southlake, Preston & 121, and the new Preston Hollow Village complex.

 

Harvest: A new seasonal kitchen is coming to McKinney Square in September. Dallas native chef Andrea Schakelford and the owners of Rick’s Chophouse intend to bring the best of farm-to-table, local, and seasonal ingredients to the restaurant’s menu.

 

Rapscallion: The minds behind Boulevardier and Veritas Wine Room are planning a new Southern-style bistro that will open some time in the first half of 2015. The concept is “neighborhood-friendly” and will be situated on Greenville Ave. between Trader Joe’s and The Libertine.

 

Remedy: Chef Danyele McPherson, formerly of The Grape, is joining the HG Sply Co. team in a new venture called Remedy, which will open later this summer. Owner Elias Pope and his crew are remaining tight lipped on what the menu will offer, but he’s hinted that it will have a soda shop feel. Remedy will go in the old Public House space on Greenville Ave.

 

Trinity Groves: Didi’s Tamale Diner, Kate Weiser Chocolate, Off-Site Kitchen, Sushi Bayashi, and St. Rocco’s are all coming-soon to Dallas’ hippest foodie area.

Y’all, get ready to swoon over the food and beverage events being served up with week in D-FW. From Texas BBQ Week and cooking classes, to a bar crawl and a wine tasting, there’s something for everyone to get excited about on this edition of Food & Beverage News.

 

Flying Saucer BeerFeast 2014: Tickets go on sale today, Wednesday, July 16, for the 9th annual Flying Saucer BeerFeast, which will kick off in Fort Worth on October 11. The event will feature more than 40 brewers and 60 craft beers, live music, and food.

 

Food Truck Schedule: Click to find where your favorite meals on wheels will be all week long.

 

Tap Takeover at Goodfriend: Rabbit Hole Brewing is doing a tap takeover of the Lakewood beer and burger joint on Thursday, July 17. Special menu items and beer cocktails will also be available.

 

Wine 101 at Cork: Thursday from 7 to 9pm, get a lesson in the basics of wine including how to identify smells and tastes, how to pair wine with meals, how to read a wine label, and how to spot defects. Wine and cheese from Molto Formaggio are provided with you ticket purchase.

 

Food Truck Frenzy: Friday, July 18, you can find 8 of your favorite food trucks, including Gandolfo’s Deli, Little Greek Food Truck, What’s Da Scoop?, and Flatlanders Taco Company, at Esplanade at Fair Park from 11am to 2pm. Admission and parking are free, plus there will be live music.

 

Camp Bowie Neighborhood Bar Crawl: From 5 to 9pm on Friday you can hit some of the best neighborhood bars in Fort Worth’s Camp Bowie District. Stops include Showdown Saloon, Sarah’s Place, and Mule Pub. Rahr & Sons will provide beer along the way and Lee’s Grilled Cheese and Sauzy’s food trucks will serve up fresh food.

 

Dallas Farmer’s Market Cooking Classes: Learn from the chefs of the market every Saturday through August 9 from 11:30am to 1pm. This weekend’s demonstration will be held by Chef Jeff Moschetti of Jasper’s Restaurant and will cover summer grilling.

 

Bishop Cider Company Grand Opening: If you’re a fan of hard cider you’ll want to be a part of the inaugural keg tapping of Dallas’ newest cider company on Saturday. For the price of admission, just $22, you’ll get a branded growler, a sample flight, a slice of Zoli’s pizza, and live music.

 

Texas BBQ Week 2014: Texas Monthly and Shiner Beers are teaming up to celebrate fabulous barbecue state-wide, with 54 restaurants joining this year’s movement. Phil’s Philly Grill Opening: After 10 years of serving up delicious cheesesteaks and chicken phillies in malls across DFW, San Antonio, and Austin, the first standalone location is set to open in Prestonwood Town Center by the end of this month.
