Feature We Love: Front Porches

Feature We Love: Front Porches

It’s safe to say most people grew up with a front porch. Traditionally, they’re associated with a simpler time — when neighbors brought over baked goods, waved to each other from across the way or just hung out and conversed while the sun went down. Regardless, there’s always some emotion brewing when it comes to that classic front space.

The front porch also provides a great opportunity to improve your curb appeal. Because, whether you’re selling or not, it’s always a good idea to make sure your home is giving off the best impression.

Below are a few front porches that have us wishing for a breezy morning (or evening), a hot cup of coffee and a fresh newspaper.

The added living space, curb appeal, and charm of a front porch are just a few of the reasons why this feature has become a staple of the American home. Odds are pretty good that you either grew up with one, watched families gather on them in TV shows, or just like the way they look architecturally.

Even if a front porch isn’t at the top of your must-have list, it’s always a welcome amenity. Not sure you agree? The pictures below will convince you otherwise.

It’s no secret that we’re big advocates of curb appeal. Helping your home make the best first impression is always a good idea, whether you’re selling or not. While there are many ways to improve your curb appeal, one feature that always translates well is a front porch.

We’d say the odds are pretty good that most people either grew up with a front porch, watched families gather on them in TV shows, or just like the way they look architecturally. Whatever the reason, the emotion attached to front porches is inherently good. Traditionally, they’re also associated with a simpler time, when homes all existed on streets where neighbors brought over cookies and waved to each other while driving down the street.

Check out eight front porches that have us wishing for a breezy morning, a hot cup of coffee, and a fresh newspaper.

Welcome Back the Front Porch

According to the National Association of Realtors and the National Association of Home Builders, front porches are heading for a comeback as one of the most popular amenities in 2014. Though you may not have realized, front porches have been traded out in recent years for front-facing garages, more backyard space, and decks in the back of homes that offer more privacy to homeowners.

This year, builders expect to see a great reemergence of the front porch. Most often associated with a great place to drink a cup of morning coffee and a resting place for parents watching over their kids out in the neighborhood, the front porch is a sign of simpler times. Even if it’s not a grand space, a front porch adds architectural detail, curb appeal, and is an inviting feature for home buyers. Adding a couple rocking chairs, a porch swing, or a small bench creates an extension of the home and a place to sit back and connect with neighbors.

Of The Day: Front Porch Havens in DFW

This OTD is inspired by this week s Want It Wednesday on our Facebook page. We were thrilled to get such a great response from our friends and followers, and it inspired us to dedicate a blog post to the topic. Even in these high temperatures, a cool morning, or evening, on the porch can be a great time to forget all your stress and just watch the sunset (or your quirky neighbors). We ve picked five homes currently listed with Ebby agents that have the perfect front porches to sit back, relax, and enjoy the little things that make life so great.

At 9618 Hillview Drive in Lake Highlands is our first dreamy front porch. This brick, Georgian-style home has beautiful white banisters on two stories, one of which surrounds the first floor front porch. This porch has all the southern charm in the world, with white rocking chairs and a porch swing. Can t you just see yourself unwinding right here with a cup of coffee or a cold iced tea? For more information, contact The Dybvad and Phelps Group at 214-669-6255 or dybvadphelpsgroup@ebby.com.

A brick home at 6903 Westlake Avenue in Lakewood is the site of our second featured front porch. This covered area is ideal for an after dinner gathering of family or friends. It’s surrounded by large brick archways and has a fan to keep you extra cool in this triple digit heat. It is currently home to a couch, two chairs, and two tables, which show off just how spacious this area is.For more details, contact Streiff and Williams at 214-729-3595 or streiffwilliams@ebby.com.

A refined Victorian home in Waxahachie can be found at 401 Oldham. The front porch here seems so airy and peaceful. The home is up off the street, giving the porch a great view of passersby. There is currently a swing on one end of the porch, leaving the area on other side open for a table and a few chairs. Grab your favorite drink and wave to the neighbors as they walk by with their dogs from the comfort of your new porch swing. Contact Jan Davis at 9972-283-7519 or jandavis@ebby.com for more on this property.

Our fourth front porch is in McKinney at 902 W Louisiana Street. This area also has a white banister, like our first home, and a great fan, like our second. It seems to be a pretty perfect combination of size, shape and features. As far as we re concerned, give us a rocker, a little shade, and the peace of mind of owning our own home and we re happy, happy, happy. To learn more, contact the Riederer & Hogan Group at 214-707-9557 or rhgroup@ebby.com.

Ok, how great is this one? We re in the Hollywood Heights/Santa Monica area of East Dallas at 7006 Santa Monica Drive for our final front porch. This one also features a charming white banister and plenty of room for family and friends. Grab a chair, take a breath, close your eyes, and you might just feel like you re on a mini-vacation without ever leaving home. If you d like more details, contact Cary Norton at 214-704-2705 or carynorton@ebby.com.

Thanks for checking in with our latest Of The Day. We hope everyone has a great weekend and finds some time to relax, even if it’s not on one of these fabulous front porches.
