Agents and Brokerages: Choose Wisely

Agents and Brokerages: Choose Wisely

Mary Frances Burleson, the president and CEO of Ebby Halliday Realtors, recently sent the below letter as part of her Friday email series.

If you are considering buying or selling a home, it is likely you may choose your real estate agent based upon a referral from a friend, a relative or a colleague. According to recent surveys by the National Association of Realtors, personal referrals are the primary way both first-time and repeat buyers and sellers select an agent.

However, once a specific agent has been referred and has been selected, the brokerage firm the agent is affiliated with should also be carefully considered. Sellers should ask whether the brokerage has a strong online marketing presence, so their listed home receives the most extensive presentation to the market.

Today’s buyers vigorously shop online, with approximately 90 percent beginning their home search on the Web; and many tech-savvy buyers use smart phone apps to search for homes for sale.

Ebby Halliday Realtors’ website, ebby.com, is among the country’s most powerful and successful real estate sites. The site plus additional features such as proximity search and map search are readily available using free Ebby apps for iPhone or Android.

With a 73-year track record of success and more than 1,850 real estate professionals in 35 strategically located North Texas offices, Ebby Halliday Realtors stands ready to assist you with all of your home-buying and selling needs.

Tom Landry Classic Awards Scholarships

Tom Landry Classic Awards Scholarships

After legendary Dallas Cowboys Head Coach Tom Landry’s passing in 2000, the “Tom Landry Classic” was created to honor his legacy. For 17 years now, “the Classic” has had strong ties to North Texas high school football programs and awarded scholarships to the participating schools’ student-athletes. Although the games are played in the fall, the culmination of the Tom Landry Classic is in the spring when a banquet is held to honor scholarship winners.

On April 24, Ebby Halliday Realtors presented its 2016-2017 scholarship winner, Courtney Reid, at the Classic’s annual banquet. It marked the 17th time in as many years that Ebby Halliday has supported the Tom Landry Classic.

Scholarship applicants must exhibit Landry-like characteristics and are selected on the basis of three criteria: academic excellence, community service and leadership.

“Tom Landry was a man of faith and family, which he valued even more than his highly successful 29-year coaching career, and scholarship recipients like Courtney truly excel in balancing those qualities,” says Mary Frances Burleson, president and CEO of Ebby Halliday Realtors.

Courtney, who will graduate from Lovejoy High School in late May, is a member of the Lovejoy Band and has completed more than 100 hours of community service at The Samaritan Inn and the Allen Animal Shelter while in high school. She is an AP Scholar with Distinction, a member of the National Honor Society, a writer for her school’s newspaper, and a member of the speech and debate team. She will attend Texas A&M University and major in Forensic and Investigative Sciences.

Courtney received a commemorative crystal award from Ms. Burleson at the scholarship banquet.

“This event — more specifically, this banquet — allows us to pass on the wonderful legacy of Tom Landry to a whole new generation of young people,” says Tom Landry Classic Executive Director Kris Cumnock.

“Ebby Halliday Realtors was founded on three principles of service: service to our clients, service to our industry and service to our community,” says Burleson. “We are very proud to support the Tom Landry Classic scholarship program and to be part of an organization that places service to others at the forefront of everything we do.”

Santa Cops Drive Assists Victims of Crime

Santa Cops Drive Assists Victims of Crime

Santa Cops, created and developed by Dallas police officers, assists members of the community who have been victims of crime. Members of the department identify families in need and a selection committee determines whether each family meets the criteria of the program. Those that are selected, based on officers’ observations and comments, are prioritized by need.

The next step is the best part of the process: watching the children’s faces when officers bring toys to their home just before Christmas. The Santa Cops program has assisted over 10,000 families throughout the years.

Do Something for Someone Every Day

Do Something for Someone Every Day

One of the great passions of Ebby Halliday Acers’ life was service to the community she proudly called home. Ebby, who founded Ebby Halliday Realtors in 1945 and passed away last year, left an extraordinary legacy of philanthropy to her adopted community of North Texas.

While Ebby helped thousands of people during her lifetime, she had a special place in her heart for young people. Ebby did not have children of her own, but she helped educate and support many children, teenagers and young adults.

In an effort to further our founder’s impact on North Texas, Ebby Halliday Realtors’ Corporate Office “adopted” students at Ebby’s namesake school in southern Dallas, Ebby Halliday Elementary, to ensure they have gifts of their own this holiday season.

Mary Frances Burleson, president and CEO of Ebby Halliday Realtors, remarked, “Each of us who had the good fortune of knowing Ebby was touched by the grace, fortitude and compassion with which she lived her life. Ebby had a very simple saying that she lived by, ‘Do something for someone every day.’ As we reflect on 2016 and look forward to 2017, we’re more committed than ever to honor Ebby’s extraordinary legacy through exemplary service to our clients, industry and community.”

Burleson Among D-FW’s Most Influential Leaders

Mary Frances Burleson Among D-FW's Most Influential

Mary Frances Burleson, president and CEO of the Ebby Halliday Companies, is featured in the newest edition of D CEO Magazine’s The Dallas 500, the region’s definitive directory of the most powerful business leaders in Dallas-Fort Worth.

Featuring leaders in more than 60 categories, The Dallas 500 is a special edition publication that celebrates the most influential leaders in North Texas. Unprecedented in scope, The Dallas 500 provides an engaging, personal look at the people that make Dallas such a powerful economic force.

Mary Frances’ story is engaging, to say the least. In 1958, she was a temporary worker with Jobs Unlimited and was sent to Ebby Halliday Realtors as a part-time secretary and receptionist.

Mary Frances was inspired by what she saw: sales associates who were enjoying and thriving in their careers. “My husband said that I had looked over the garden wall when I started working for Ebby Halliday and that I was never the same again,” says Mary Frances. “Ebby mentored and helped many, many people to find their career path … and I was one of the fortunate ones.”

Ebby quickly recognized Mary Frances’ talent, and with Ebby’s encouragement, she rose through the ranks of management positions to eventually become the chief executive of Ebby Halliday Realtors. Under Mary Frances’ guidance, the firm has grown to become the nation’s 10th-largest residential real estate company in sales volume.

As the chief executive of the Ebby Halliday Companies, Mary Frances has had the opportunity to speak and serve widely; but she has always held firm to the belief that her role is simple: to help others – in particular, the company’s agents and staff, to achieve their goals.

In 2013, Mary Frances received the National Association of Realtors Distinguished Service Award. Out of approximately 1 million Realtors, no more than two are recognized with the award each year.

In 2014, Mary Frances was the recipient of the Highland Park Independent School District’s Distinguished Alumni Award. The award recognizes graduates who have distinguished themselves through their achievements in their field or contributions to society.

In 2015, Mary Frances was honored with the Dallas Business Journal’s Women in Business Award. The award recognizes outstanding Dallas-Fort Worth-area women business leaders who not only are making a difference in their industries, but also in their communities.

And, earlier this year, Mary Frances was honored as D CEO’s Residential Real Estate Executive of the Year. The award recognizes outstanding achievement in the residential real estate sector.

Mary Frances is a very civic-minded member of the Dallas community. Through her commitment to such groups as the North Dallas Chamber of Commerce, of which she previously chairman, she has helped make Dallas a better place to live, work and enjoy life.

Congratulations to Mary Frances and to everyone associated with the Ebby Halliday Family of Companies. As Mary Frances often says, she is blessed to be part of the best team in residential real estate.

Burleson Named Real Estate Executive of the Year

Burleson Named Residential Real Estate Executive of the Year

Surrounded by members from throughout the Ebby Halliday Companies, Mary Frances Burleson was honored as D CEO’s Residential Real Estate Executive of the Year this past Wednesday night at Dakota’s restaurant in downtown Dallas.

Long before she passed away at the age of 104 last September, Ebby Halliday knew who she wanted to succeed her at the helm of the company she founded in 1945. After all, Mary Frances had been by her side for more than 50 years, and has been instrumental in growing the Ebby Halliday Companies into the largest independent residential real estate firm in Texas. As President and CEO, Burleson oversees Ebby Halliday Realtors, Dave Perry-Miller Real Estate and Williams Trew Real Estate, with combined sales of $7.85 billion in 2015.

Ebby and Mary Frances proved to be quite a powerful duo. Since Ebby’s death, Mary Frances has been repositioning the Ebby Halliday Companies from a legacy company to one that’s on the leading edge of incorporating technology – especially mobile platforms.

Burleson, who is also a recipient of the National Association of Realtors’ prestigious Distinguished Service Award, says she has no intention of slowing down. “I’m not going to sit on the porch and rock,” she told D CEO magazine in an interview highlighting her storied career. “If you do, your mind and body atrophy, and I don’t have time for that.”

Congratulation to Mary Frances, who often says she is blessed to be part of the best team in residential real estate. We feel equally blessed to have her as our leader.
